Mediation itself is not required for divorce. However, if you plan to apply to court for parenting orders, in most cases you must first attempt Family Dispute Resolution and obtain a Section 60I certificate under Australian family law. Property settlement mediation is voluntary but highly recommended.

How long does divorce mediation take?

Most separated couples resolve matters in 2–4 weeks through 2–3 mediation sessions, depending on complexity. Simpler parenting arrangements might take 1 session. Property settlement typically take between 1 to 2 sessions.

What if we can't agree on everything?

Do I need a lawyer present?
